Buy the first book of the Virgin River series

Season 2 of Virgin River premiered on Netflix last month and I already can’t wait to see what happens next. Based on the book series by Robyn Carr, Virgin River is a heartwarming show with likable characters (for the most part) and a unique setting.

I absolutely love Mel (Alexandra Breckenridge) and Jack (Martin Henderson) together and I can’t wait to see how their story progresses, especially after the shocking season 2 finale!

Once I finished the show, I decided to check out the first book in the series–there are 22 Virgin River books in total! Even though Mel and Jack are the show’s central characters, they are only the main characters in the first Virgin River book. The subsequent books focus on various members of the Virgin River community.

Differences between the Virgin River book and show

I wanted to see how the book compares to the show and, let me tell you, there are many differences. The show definitely changed a lot to make things more dramatic. For example, in the first Virgin River book, we meet Hope, a down to earth chain smoker who is actually older than Doc by a number of years.

In the book, Hope and Doc were never married. The entire storyline from the show about Hope and Doc’s crumbling marriage is totally absent from the book, and the novel version of Hope is nowhere near as gossipy. Also, Charmaine is not a prominent character in the novel. Her relationship with Jack is a lot more casual and he almost immediately breaks up with her so that he can pursue Mel. So far, it’s a pretty good read!
