Netflix is making more Extraction movies

The Russo Brothers saw huge success with their Netflix original film Extraction starring Chris Hemsworth. This film was released in April 2020 and became the streaming network’s most-watched original film.

Not surprisingly, a short month later, it was confirmed that a second installment was being planned. Now the Russo Brothers are teasing about opening up the Extraction universe.

The brothers teamed up with the stunt coordinator turned director Sam Hargrave for this production. All three of them are known for their work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so it was exciting to see them work together on another project. And, they did not disappoint.

Hemsworth stars as Tyler Rake, a black-ops mercenary hired to rescue an Indian drug lord’s kidnapped son in Bangladesh. It is an action-packed film based on the graphic novel Ciudad by Ande Parks, Joe Russo, Anthony Russo and artist Fernando León González.

David Harbour (Stranger Things and Black Widow) also starred in the original film, and fans want to see more of his character Gaspar, an ex-mercenary. Hargrave shared in an interview with Collider that Gaspar and Rake know each other well, and they did create a backstory for these characters. It would be exciting to see a prequel and how the two characters meet and get to know one another. The fact that they are both mercenaries could make for some interesting viewing. Possible some majorly exciting mission and all that would entail.

According to Collider, Joe Russo recently shared some thoughts on the future of the Extraction franchise:

"“We’re trying to find more interesting ways to tell these stories and cross-pollinate them. We’re big fans of just forging new paths in narrative. Can we go backwards and forwards at the same time? Can things that happened in the past affect the movies in the present? What are new ways to tell those stories? And can we see different points of view? Every antagonist is the protagonist in their own story, so can we see their point of view? How do they perceive the world? What makes them empathetic? I think what makes that a compelling element to the Extraction universe is it is a global franchise telling global stories, and we’d like to diversify the point of view in those movies.”"

It sounds like they plan to continue the dual point-of-view storylines that were used in the first film. This gives depth to the story engaging viewers even more. Many characters could be expounded on, including Randeep Hooda’s character, Saju Rav.

Joe Russo also shared with Collider that they hope to start filming Extraction 2 in the fall of 2021 due to Hemsworth’s filming schedule. This would mean we wouldn’t see a release date until later in 2022.

Until then, be sure to check out the original film Extraction on Netflix.
