With the sunny weather and theme park attractions, Florida’s a popular vacation destination every winter. It’s no wonder there aren’t millions of Christmas movies about families traveling down south for a warm winter holiday (beyond Home Alone 2, of course). Ernest Saves Christmas, the third film in a series to feature Jim Varney’s titular character, finds Ernest P. Worrell picking up Santa Claus in his taxicab in Orlando, Florida. Santa’s on his way to pass on the Santa torch to his successor, and it’s up to Ernest to make sure the mission’s completed and Christmas goes on without a mishap.
Ernest Saves Christmas comes from director John R. Cherry III, who worked with Varney to direct multiple Ernest P. Worrell movies. The film wasn’t a critical darling, but it still proved a commercial success during its theatrical run, which grossed over $28 million against a $6 million budget. Although Ernest Saves Christmas was released under the Disney fold, it’s not currently available to stream on Disney+. Those of us who grew up in the ’80s and ’90s with Ernest movies to keep us laughing will have to track down this nostalgic Christmas adventure on another platform. Rest assured, Ernest P. Worrell saved Christmas in Florida and set a new Santa on his way in a sleigh.
