Without a doubt, New York City might be the most popular location for Christmas movies. Obviously, there’s something innately magical about the city during Christmastime because of the Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center and the other traditions the city shares with the rest of the world. But of all the Christmas movies to take place in New York, Elf cannot be topped. Will Ferrell stars as Buddy the Elf, a human who was accidentally transported to the North Pole as a baby and consequently raised as an elf. Acting on the feeling he doesn’t belong with Santa’s elves, Buddy travels to New York City to find his biological father, Walter Hobbs (James Caan).
Buddy arrives in the busy city in full elf garb and with an unbreakable sense of Christmas spirit. Although Walter and others don’t buy into his childlike wonder, Buddy eventually wears everyone down into believing just in time to save Christmas. Elf earned mostly positive reception from critics and brought in a worldwide box office gross of over $221 million. Its popularity has propelled Elf into a worldwide Christmas classic that has spawned a Broadway musical, animated special and video game. Truly, there’s no one we’d rather spend Christmas in New York with than Buddy the Elf, singing Christmas carols and eating sugar and syrup until Santa arrives.
