Technically, The Polar Express doesn’t take place in one particular setting since the movie’s titular train remains in motion from one place to the next. But one special character’s home in Michigan centers the story of believing in the magic of Christmas. Based on the popular children’s book of the same name, The Polar Express stars Tom Hanks in various roles, particularly a train conductor that welcomes a skeptical young boy on board the Polar Express. The train’s destination is the North Pole, where the young boy and other children will be challenged in their disbelief of Santa Claus and the overall sense of magical wonder in the holidays.
The Polar Express comes from director Robert Zemeckis, who also directed such films as Back to the Future, Forrest Gump, Cast Away, A Christmas Carol and The Witches, among many other blockbusters. The film received middling reviews from critics but proved a box office hit and an instant holiday classic. It’s unlikely you’ll find an animated Christmas movie as uplifting and inspiring as The Polar Express, and there are a lot of uplifting and inspiring animated Christmas movies. You’re never too young or old to board the Polar Express for a trip from Michigan to the North Pole, specifically when Tom Hanks is leading the way.
