Best Netflix shows of 2020: 18. Unorthodox

Unorthodox is the best Netflix show on this list that you’ve never heard of!  It premiered on the streaming service in March 2020.

The series is a German-American series, and it’s based on Deborah Feldman’s autobiography, Unorthodox: The Scandalous Rejection of My Hasidic Roots.

Unorthodox follows a young woman living in an ultra-Orthodox community in the US. She’s in an arranged marriage. When she leaves this life behind and moves to Germany, her husband tries to find her.

This show is wild! It’s a must-watch on Netflix for sure!

If you haven’t seen the series yet, I highly recommend this series. It’s right up there with The Queen’s Gambit and the best Netflix limited series to date.

Unorthodox won an Emmy in 2020. It was one of the few Netflix shows to win an Emmy this year, which is surprising. Netflix usually does pretty well at the Emmys, but Schitt’s Creek and Succession cleaned up.

Thankfully, Unorthodox was in a different category. The series won the award for Outstanding Directing for a Limited Series, Movie, or Dramatic Special (Maria Schrader).

Unorthodox is not coming back for season 2 on Netflix.
