How many Call the Midwife Christmas specials are there?
Are all Call the Midwife Christmas specials on Netflix?
There is something about Call the Midwife that evokes the spirit of holidays no matter what season the episodes are set during. However, the eight Call the Midwife Christmas specials never fail to muster even more heart and magic.
Even better, they’re available to watch as part of Netflix TV show offerings. Well, seven of them are.
Where to find the Call the Midwife Christmas specials on Netflix
The first Call the Midwife Christmas special aired ahead of the official start of season 2 in 2012. So that’s where you’ll find it. Under the series 2 Call the Midwife episodes on Netflix.
Next is the 2013 Christmas special under series 3, and so on. However, when you get to series 6, you’ll notice a gap. It doesn’t start with a Christmas episode on Netflix like the previous seasons do.
And if you pay attention to the years, you’ll notice series 5 starts with a two-part Christmas 2015 special, but series 6 episodes end with a 2017 Christmas special. (Which technically belongs with series 7.)
Where is the 2016 Christmas special? Did they skip a year? No. It’s just not on Netflix.
The missing Call the Midwife Christmas special on Netflix
The Call the Midwife season 6 Christmas special in 2016 was the one where Sister Winifred (Victoria Yeates), Sister Julienne (Jenny Agutter), Dr. Patrick Turner (Stephen McGann), Nurse Trixie Franklin (Helen George), Nurse Phyllis Crane (Linda Bassett) and Nurse Barbara Gilbert (Charlotte Ritchie) go to work at Hope Clinic Mission Hospital in South Africa. No need for their trademark red cardigans there!
This is the one Call the Midwife Christmas special that’s missing from Netflix. Not sure why, but if we find out, we’ll be sure to write about it.
Other quirky Call the Midwife Christmas special listings on Netflix
Things get back to normal with the 2018 special. You’ll find it at the start of the series 8 episodes.
However, like series 6, the series 9 Christmas 2019 special doesn’t lead off all of that season’s episodes either. It comes at the very end. Or they do since it is a two-parter.
And series 7 is deceptive and looks like it doesn’t have a Christmas special either. That’s because it’s listed under series 6.
The two-parter Call the Midwife Christmas specials
There are three Call the Midwife Christmas specials that are two-parters. The first was in 2015. You’ll find it under series 5.
Both the 2018 and 2019 Christmas specials were also two-parters. The 2019 special shares something in common with the 2016 Christmas special. It’s not missing like the 2016 one is though, but the majority of it takes place away from the Nonnatus House in Poplar.
Mother Superior, Mother Mildred (Miriam Margolyes), feels called to help a desperately understaffed clinic in Scotland’s Outer Hebrides. She recruits several of the sisters and nurses of Nonnatus to join her, including Sister Julienne (Jenny Agutter), Shelagh Turner (Laura Main), Nurse Trixie Franklin (Helen George), Nurse Phyllis Crane (Linda Bassett), Nurse Valerie Dyer (Jennifer Kirby) and Nurse Lucille Anderson (Leonie Elliott).
They’re also accompanied by Shelagh’s husband Dr. Turner (Stephen McGann) and the ever-dependable handyman, Fred Buckle (Cliff Parisi). Sister Monica Joan (Judy Parfitt) is not invited, but sneakily makes her way there anyway.
Also interesting to note, something else the 2016 and 2019 Christmas specials share in common is that they rank as the least popular of the Call the Midwife Christmas specials.
That’s not to say they’re bad, though. All of the Call the Midwife Christmas specials are beloved and fantastic. They all also score over 8 out of 10 stars on IMDB. Seasons 9 and 6 ranked the lowest with 8.2 and 8.4 stars, respectively. But see? That’s still very high. Just a smidge lower than the other Christmas specials.
So now you know where to find all of the Call the Midwife Christmas specials on Netflix…except for the one that’s missing.
