Is Space Force coming back for season 2?

Space Force season 2 is officially happening!

Netflix announced that Space Force had been renewed for season 2, according to a report from The Hollywood Reporter.

We’ve been waiting a long time for this renewal news. Space Force premiered on Netflix in May 2020 and received a lukewarm response from viewers and critics. We heard the new season was already in the works a while back, but we had to wait even longer for Netflix to confirm that news.

Things sound like they’ll be a little different this time around, though. According to the report from THR, Netflix is moving Space Force season 2 production to Vancouver. The first season was filmed in Los Angeles.

In addition, Norm Hiscock has joined the series as co-showrunner along with creator, showrunner, and executive producer Greg Daniels. Jimmy O. Yang, who stars in the series, has also joined the writers room for the new season.

It appears Netflix is trying to capture lightning in a bottle like The Office did after the first season. THR mentioned that in the report, and that’s the reason all these changes are happening.

Overall, I think these changes are a good thing. The show was funny, but it lacked a little direction and purpose. If they can capture that in the new season, there’s a good chance the second season will be successful.

This show has been compared to The Office a bunch. I mean, with Daniels, who created The Office (US), and Carell, who starred in The Office, in the mix, the comparisons are obvious. Overall, Space Force never connected with the greater audience like The Office had. Not so far, anyway.

It will be interesting to see if Daniels and the team can pull off a switch like this. I’m excited to see what happens.

When will Space Force season 2 be on Netflix?

THR did not list the Space Force season 2 release date on Netflix in the report. We likely won’t find out when the new season will be released until sometime in 2021.

THR reported production is slated to begin in 2021. I’m hoping it’s sooner rather than later. If they do start filming soon, like in the spring, there’s a pretty good chance we could see the new season by the end of 2021.

If not, it’ll likely be 2022 before the new season of the Netflix original is released on Netflix.
