There are currently zero Hanukkah movies on Netflix

Christmas movies are all over Netflix right now. Whether you’re into rom-coms, heartwarming tales of sadness and joy, or kids going on holiday adventures, there is a Christmas movie for everyone. But where are the Hanukkah movies? There are zero. Zilch. Nada. None.

You’d think Netflix would have at least one Hanukkah movie. Hallmark even has a few Hanukkah movies after some backlash (although, they’re not that great), so how does Netflix have zero? With how good Netflix is at rom-coms, how could they not come up with an idea for a Hanukkah-centered romance?

Here is my idea for the taking: a rom-com with two people who have to fake date over the eight days of Hanukkah in order to get their parents off their backs about when they’re going to get married/be in a serious relationship. Come on Netflix, you know that would be amazing! Do you know how many Jewish romantics would watch it?

And it’s not even that Netflix has never had any movies that fit the bill. They used to. Just Google it and you’ll see articles from 2019 and 2017 about the Hanukkah movies on Netflix. Where did these movies go?

If it’s a rights issue, as it often is, why weren’t they replaced with another Jewish holiday film? They even got rid of Eight Crazy Nights, the 2002 Adam Sandler animated film that’s less than great (ok, it’s awful).

Are there Jewish films on Netflix? Yes, but on Hanukkah, when you’re supposed to be celebrating, you don’t really want to watch a Holocaust movie.

Yeah, one of those lists I mentioned before…it included Inglorious Bastards. Sorry, y’all. Not a Hanukkah movie! The Boy in the Striped Pajamas…not a Hanukkah movie (and problematic AF).

And really, us Jews can only watch Fiddler on the Roof so many times. My dad frequently plays the soundtrack and if I have to hear “If I Were a Rich Man” one more time, I might scream.

So Netflix, please fix this! Do I like The Princess Switch as much as the next person? Yes, of course. But I’d also love a few Hanukkah rom-coms (with diverse Jewish casts, please!) that make my heart feel all warm and squishy while I shove latkes and chocolate gelt in my mouth.

I also wouldn’t mind a historical drama and an action-adventure, but I won’t want to push my luck.

Christmas isn’t the only winter holiday. I know you know this. Why not show us by putting some Jewish holiday movies on your streaming platform?
