All four episodes of The Liberator hit Netflix tonight

Looking for something to watch this week that’s different than what you’ve seen before? Or maybe you’re a history buff looking for a new historical drama? If so, you need to check out The Liberator when it comes to Netflix on Wednesday, Nov. 11.

You can watch at 12:01 a.m. PT on Netflix.

The Liberator is an animated war drama starring Bradley James, Martin Sensmeier, Jose Miguel Vasquez, and Ross Anderson.

The series is four episodes in total and follows the true story of a group of soldiers called the Thunderbirds which consisted of Native Americans (from over 52 different tribes), Mexican Americans, and white cowboys from the Dust Bowl of the US.

They first landed in Sicily on July 10, 1943, and made a 500-day trek through Nazi-occupied Europe fighting the Nazis and doing what they could to keep themselves and each other alive. They fought through some of the bloodiest battles of WWII.

Because it was later in the war, the US military had taken away some of the discriminatory policies that said who could and couldn’t fight on the battlefield. This battalion (the 3rd Batallion of the 157th Infantry) showed the results of that with how diverse it was.

Take a look at the trailer here:

While this is animated, it’s not like a cartoon. It looks like they filmed it like a live-action show and then put an animated filter over it. All the actors’ features and actions are there. It doesn’t look like a cartoon drawing of Bradley James, it’s actually him just slightly digitized. It’s very cool.

Originally, The Liberator wasn’t supposed to even be on Netflix. According to Variety, it started as an 8-hour long live-action series for The History Channel. Now as a 4-episode animated drama, it’s much easier to watch (eight hours is a lot of war content to handle) and the animation gives it a unique spin.

The series took a long time to get made because of several setbacks but the creators, writers, and producers behind it stuck with it and finally were able to see it picked up and streamed by Netflix.

As we normally see animation coming from the US as something for kids or something used for comedies, it’s wonderful to see a much more serious topic covered in this medium.
