Best Christmas movies on Netflix: Dance Dreams: Hot Chocolate Nutcracker

Yes, it’s another The Nutcracker adaptation, but settle in, y’all, this selection is actually a documentary. Who doesn’t love going behind the scenes and learning everything they can about a work of art? We certainly don’t know anyone who would say no to that.

Produced by Shondaland, the production company owned by Shonda Rhimes, Dance Dreams: Hot Chocolate Nutcracker takes an in-depth look at Debbie Allen’s version of the ballet that’s been an annual tradition for a decade.

In Hot Chocolate Nutcracker, the Johnsons are celebrating together on Christmas Eve with a big party. Little Kara Johnson is gifted a nutcracker that’s filled with her favorite holiday treat, hot chocolate. It’s a perfect night that turns strange once Kara falls asleep.

Her once inanimate Nutcracker comes alive and three mice show up calling themselves “The Real Rat Pack.” They take Kara on an adventure to many lands including Candy Cane Land, Russia, Jazzland, the Indian Rainforest, and the Land of Kimono Dolls where the people dance to their own special grooves.

The documentary showcases the preparation that goes into Debbie Allen’s show from the performers to the costumes, it’s a huge production that will put a smile on your face and have you moving in your seat.
