Best Christmas movies on Netflix: Carol
Who doesn’t love a period piece starring Cate Blanchett? And one set in Christmas time to boot? Y’all, flop on the couch and make sure you grab your Kleenex and blanket on the way down because you’re going to need them.
Carol is set in the ’50s which means Blanchett gets to do her thing in beautiful fur coats and classic silhouettes. In this film, she plays Carol Aird, a woman whose impending divorce is making room for her to be the person she’s been suppressing since she was a teen. While shopping for a Christmas present for her daughter, Rindy, Carol meets Therese Belivet (Rooney Mara), a salesgirl at the Frankenberg department store who is an aspiring photographer.
It’s the briefest of meetings, but it’s enough for a spark to come to life between them. Therese has a boyfriend who wants her to move to France with him and a friend who is interested in her, but she can’t seem to keep her mind off of Carol. The woman intrigues her.
Their connection, however, could cost Carol custody of her daughter if her soon-to-be ex-husband Harge (Kyle Chandler) has anything to say about it. But Carol has spent too long leaving in fear of her own feelings and she refuses to let him threaten her with their child. She’s going to love fully and without reserve, and she’s determined to keep him from stopping her.
