Is His House worth watching this weekend?

His House is a thriller mystery about a refugee couple who struggle to adjust to their new life in England. This film originally premiered at Sundance earlier this year but was released on Netflix today.

His House follows couple Bol (Sope Dirisu) and Rial (Wunmi Mosaku) after escaping war-torn South Sudan. England grants them temporary asylum while their case is under review. The couple must follow strict guidelines and promises to see their social worker, Mark (Matt Smith), once a week.

Bol and Rial’s situation seems too good to be true when given an entire house to live alone. Usually, many families live under the same roof, but Bol and Rial have a large place to themselves. Mark even says their house is bigger than his own.

Bol and Rial are excited to move into their new home, but they are still grief-stricken from losing their daughter along their difficult journey. They try to make the best of their home even though there are bugs everywhere, and there’s possibly a demon lurking within the walls. Quickly after moving in, they start hearing strange noises and seeing things in the dark.

His House is a haunted house movie that will make you want to cover your eyes occasionally. The house isn’t the typical haunted house you’re used to seeing in movies, though, because it’s not a decaying mansion in the middle of nowhere. The house is a run-down row house in an impoverished English suburb.

It’s more than a typical horror story

The story of His House isn’t entirely about monsters and demons, though. This story explores the terrors of the refugee experience. There’s an emotional depth that many thrillers don’t have interwoven into the plot. The differences between the husband and wife are telling. Bol is obsessed with the sounds he hears in the house. He looks for holes and is determined to confront what’s there because he wants to make the place his home. Rial believes something is haunting them and thinks they are cursed.

Bol and Rial eventually understand where and how they fit into the world and need to determine if they can reconcile their past with their present. The story doesn’t necessarily give much clarity, but it’s a complex plot that offers the viewer a bit of discomfort. So, even though there’s an interesting ending, don’t expect Bol and Rial to run off into the sunset.

His House is an intriguing mystery with some thrilling horror-style moments mixed in. It is a great option to watch over Halloween weekend if you want a unique scary story to occupy your time.

His House is now streaming on Netflix.
