Watch the trailer for Netflix’s The Prom

Netflix’s adaptation of The Prom, from Ryan Murphy, released its first trailer on Oct. 22. With the new footage, fans of the 2018 musical can see what kind of glam the film will bring to the popular stage play.

The Prom premieres on Netflix on Dec. 11.

While The Prom is not coming out during prom season itself, the trailer definitely promises a lot of glitter, tuxes, Meryl Streep and musical numbers. That’s what prom season is really about, you know?

For those not in the know, The Prom follows a group of self-obsessed washed-up theatre stars (Meryl Streep, James Corden, Nicole Kidman, and Andrew Rannells) who converge on a small town in order to help a high school girl Emma (Jo Ellen Pellman) be able to take her girlfriend Alyssa (Ariana DeBose) to the prom.

In an interview with EW, Murphy said that he wanted the film to be a callback to the musical movies of old, while also bringing forth a sense of modernity.

Here’s what Murphy told EW:

"“I wanted to make something that had the sparkle and the charm and humor of Singin’ in the Rain. That’s a show business story. It’s a look at the inside of the film world, as opposed to The Prom, which looks at the Broadway community, but when you saw the musical on Broadway, it is just full steam ahead and never stops. I loved that quality, because it did feel old-fashioned and modern.”"

Like everything in Hollywood, filming had to shut down due to COVID-19. Thankfully, there was only three days left of filming. With help and planning of scientists, the local government, and the production team, everything was able to be wrapped up for The Prom to meet its holiday release date.

Also due to the pandemic, Broadway is virtually a wasteland until late 2021. Murphy also shared that plans are in the works for screenings and events related to the film version of The Prom to benefit the Actor’s Fund.

The Prom will be released on Netflix on Dec. 11.
