Is Stranger Things season 4 still filming?

Stranger Things season 4 is moving production to New Mexico in December. According to Production Weekly, Stranger Things season 4 is scheduled to start filming in New Mexico during the last month of the year.

The news was reported by What’s on Netflix.

Overall, filming moving to New Mexico shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone paying attention to Stranger Things news for the last year or so. It was reported earlier this year that some of the production was moving to Netflix’s studio in New Mexico.

We don’t know why exactly production is moving away from Georgia, but we have some theories. It’s possible that they needed something for filming that Netflix has at that studio in New Mexico that wasn’t available to the crew in Georgia. That’s probably pretty unlikely given the scope of projects in the works in Georgia.

Remember, Stranger Things season 4’s tagline from the first teaser, “We’re not in Hawkins anymore.” I’m assuming they needed a new setting for at least some of the scenes for Stranger Things season 4.

We already know a bunch of scenes were filmed in Lithuania. Those all revolved around Hopper’s stay in the Russian prison. We know they’re filming scenes in Georgia for the kids and everyone who stayed in Hawkins.

I’m assuming that the New Mexico shoot has something to do with where the Byers plus Eleven moved to at the end of season 3. That’s likely going to be the setting for a good portion of the season. If the Byers moved somewhere in the midwest or southwest or another deserty location, it makes to film those scenes in New Mexico.

When is Stranger Things season 4 done filming?

There’s still so much we don’t know about the season, but this production timeline should start to give us an indication how long production will last.

The report also mentions they’ll continue filming in Georgia through the end of October. We don’t know much more they need to film in Georgia.

Overall, this is a little bittersweet for fans. On one hand, it’s great to know that production is continuing and coming to a close soon-ish. On the other, a December start date for production in New Mexico likely means that they’ll be filming into the beginning of next year, which means we’ll probably have to wait even longer for the Stranger Things season 4 release date.

For a show like Stranger Things season 4, we’ll likely have to wait at least six months, and probably even longer than that, from the end of the production until the season is released on Netflix. In other words, they’ll need be done filming season 4 by the spring of 2021 if we’re going to get to see the new season next year.
