There are different years The Haunting of Bly Manor is set in
The Haunting of Bly Manor is mostly set in one year. Unlike its predecessor, the story doesn’t jump back and forth between the past and the present.
Of course, there are some elements of the story told through flashbacks. And the story itself is told by a woman 20 years before the story we watch play out.
But what year is The Haunting of Bly Manor set in? We’ll break it down.
The wedding in 2007
We start the series before the story is told. With a surprise return from Carla Gugino, the series begins in 2007.
Gugino’s character is going to a wedding rehearsal dinner. That night, people are telling ghost stories. Apparently, the hotel the wedding is taking place at has a ghost story of its own, and it leads to others telling a few stories. Gugino has a story that isn’t her own, but is a ghost story.
She tells the story that we see play out throughout Bly Manor. Every now and then, we get her voiceover to continue the tale.
The main story is set in 1987
The Haunting of Bly Manor then takes us back 20 years to 1987 in London. Dani is heading to an interview to become an au pair.
Most of the story is set in 1987. We watch as Dani learns more about the house, the children, and the things that happened in the past.
Some of the story does flash to the past. We get to see Peter Quint and Mrs. Jessel’s story, which takes place around 1986, for example. For the most part, we remain in 1987 for the main scary story.
You can certainly tell the year from the clothing of the staff in the house, especially Victoria Pedretti’s Dani and Rahul Kohli’s Owen.
Of course, not all the ghosts are from that time. Keep an eye out for all the ghosts that just appear randomly in scenes. One of them includes a soldier from one of the World Wars.
