5 great Netflix shows to watch this weekend, including The Haunting of Bly Manor

We are into the second weekend of October, and many people are watching horror films and shows to gear up the Halloween holiday. Things may look a bit different this year for Halloween parties, trick or treating and other things related to the holiday. But, that doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate with awesome Netflix shows on offer.

Below is a list of some great series with a horror theme you should check out.

1. The Haunting of Bly Manor

This is the second installation of Mike Flanagan’s Haunting Anthology. The Haunting of Bly Manor is a new story surrounding a new house, Bly Manor.

This series just released and is already getting rave reviews. Flanagan is a master at the horror genre. Some of his other movies are Doctor Sleep, Gerald’s Game and Hush. He knows how to make things creepy.

This new story revolves around Bly Manor, an English country estate. The owner Henry Wingrave (Henry Thomas), needs to employ an au pair for his niece and nephew. Dani (Victoria Pedretti) interviews for and receives the job. Once she moves in, many things happen that just aren’t right. And, as time goes on, she sees things that can only be of the supernatural, and things progress from there.

Thomas and Pedretti also starred in The Haunting of Hill House and are joined by fellow Hill House castmates Olive Jackson-Cohen and Kate Siegel.

2. Ratched

Another of the new Netflix shows for 2020 is Ratched. This is an origin story of the famed Nurse Ratched made popular in One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest.

Sarah Paulsen plays Nurse Ratched, who is starting a new position at an asylum where they are leading the way in new experiments on their patients. Ratched is a calculated person who puts on the prim and proper image, but her mind is always thinking steps ahead of those around her.

Ratched has received mixed reviews, but fans of the original are bound to enjoy this story of where the heartless Nurse Ratched originated.

3. Scream (TV series)

The Scream horror franchise takes a new turn with the series. Scream the series has three seasons available on Netflix.

All of the movies and the series have that slasher vibe with comedy added in. The movie and series are always self-aware, making it a very interesting take on the slasher genre.

The series has a lot of back story around a man who was killed but came back to terrorize the community that shunned him as a teen. Everyone is a target, and you don’t know where the masked killer will show up next.

It is a series that doesn’t take itself too seriously and is good fun for fans of slasher films.

4. To the Lake

To the Lake is a Russian series of an outbreak of an illness and a group of people trying to survive.

This series takes place in Moscow after an unknown illness wrecks havoc on the citizens. This series is based on a book by Yana Vagner entitled “Vongozero.”

To the Lake follows a group of families’ dangerous journey to survive during this outbreak by heading to a deserted island hunting lodge. They must avoid anyone who has contracted the illness and the telltale signs are coughing and their blood-red eyes.

One critic stated it reminded him a bit of The Walking Dead’s survival story.

5. Hemlock Grove

Eli Roth, the man behind the great horror films Cabin Fever and Hostel, produced the horror series for Netflix, Hemlock Grove.

Hemlock Grove is based on the novel of the same name by Brian McGreevy, who also helped develop the series.

The series takes a look at strange happenings in the fictional Pennsylvania town, Hemlock Grove. Roman Godfrey (Bill Skarsgard) befriends Peter Rumancek (Landon Liboiron), who is new to the town. The two decide to look into the mystery behind some brutal murders.

"Netflix synopsis: Secrets are just part of the daily life in the small Pennsylvania town of Hemlock Grove, where the darkest evils hide in plain sight."
