One of the most highly anticipated movies of 2020 is finally on its way. Mulan will be available on Disney Plus tonight.

This is working very differently to normal. Disney isn’t just releasing Mulan to everyone. You’ll need to pay $29.99 on top of your monthly subscription. It’s one payment and you’ll keep the movie for as long as your Disney Plus subscription is running. It’s also out in theaters that are open if you prefer to watch it that way.

You’ll be able to purchase Mulan on Disney plus from 3 a.m. ET. For those on the west coast, you’ll get access to the movie at 12:01 a.m.

The decision to put it on Disney Plus at an extra cost has certainly angered many. However, it works out cheaper for many families than going to the theaters.

Not quite the Mulan story you remember

If you’ve watched the animated version of the movie recently, there are certainly elements of it you’ll need to get our of your mind. This live-action reboot isn’t the exact same story. There is no talking dragon helping our lead heroine become the best soldier in the army.

Liu Yifei will take on the titular character in a story based on the ballad as well as the animated tale. There are various versions of the ballad, which made this adaptation harder. The aim was to be as mindful of traditional Chinese audiences as well as the fans of the 1998 animated movie.

The basis of the story is still the same. A young girl chooses to break tradition and the law to join the Imperial Army when her village is called on to give a man from their family to the cause. Since her elderly father is the only man in the family, she pretends to be his son to protect him.
