Netflix shouldn’t have split Lucifer season 5 into two parts

Based on the DC Comics character created by Neil Gaiman, Sam Kieth, and Mike Dringenberg, Lucifer is a devilishly good watch.

Since its premiere, Lucifer has enthralled fans with its interesting plot, sinfully fun writing, and demonically good characters. The series stars Tom Ellis as Lucifer Morningstar, the Devil himself, who abandons his position as the ruler of Hell to run his own nightclub in Los Angeles. He becomes an advisor to the LAPD, where he helps Detective Chloe Decker (Lauren German) solve crimes.

Lucifer premiered on Fox in 2016, but the network initially canceled the show after three seasons. However, fans were over the moon to learn that Netflix picked up the series after its cancellation and the show would continue.

The popular fantasy series is gearing up to release the first half of season 5, which will arrive on Netflix on this Friday, August 21. Originally, the fifth season was intended to have 10 episodes. As reported by DigitalSpy, Netflix revealed that Lucifer‘s fifth season would be extended, bringing the episode count to a total of 16.

Season 5 of Lucifer will be split into two parts, which is a departure from the rest of the show. Here’s what Tom Ellis said while featured on The Kelly Clarkson Show about season 5:

"Season 5 of Lucifer is going to be split into two halves. Netflix are gonna drop eight episodes and then there’s gonna be a little break, and then they’re gonna drop another eight episodes."

So, why the need to split the season in half? Honestly, we’re not sure. And we’re also not sure it’s that great of an idea.

All of the previous seasons released on Netflix have premiered in their entirety. Splitting the season into two parts seems pretty random, especially because it hasn’t been done before. I know that season 5 was initially intended to have fewer episodes, so you can blame the break on that, but hopefully, there will be a tangible reason for this decision woven into the plot.

If there isn’t, the break might seem unnatural and disrupt the flow of the narrative. They might as well have just released all the episodes at the same time.

At least season 5 will be split up evenly, with 8 episodes in each part. I wonder if the season was split in half for production reasons, or to mask the clumsiness of Lucifer‘s surprise sixth season renewal. There’s no denying that fans would rather get it all at once.

Whatever the reasoning, here’s hoping that season 5 of Lucifer is the best one yet!
