Season three takes place three months after where season two left off. Unfortunately, it’s discovered by season three that the deadly virus has spread outside of the quarantine zone. This eventually translates to the demise of several key characters.

In the second to last episode of The Rain season 3, Martin attempts to convince his girlfriend that he has full control of the virus inside of him. Things go tragically wrong when the virus inside him tries to attack her. Knowing he has to save her, Martin gives up his life, swallowing the cure for the virus, but dying due to the antidote.

Things get even messier when Rasmus assumes that Martin’s girlfriend Simone was the one who killed him. Simone and Rasmus turn on each other and eventually wage a full-on war with one another.

Ultimately, it is Sarah (who is resurrected from the dead) who saves everyone. Thanks to level-headed reasoning, Rasmus understands the importance of eliminating the virus, and gives his life by taking the cure.

Though much of The Rain is dark, season 3 ends on somewhat of a positive note. Simone thanks her brother for his sacrifice, looking ahead to the future with hope. Unfortunately, the series is now over for good, as a fourth season is not happening.
