9. The Last Kingdom

Number of Seasons: 4

What It’s About: Based on Bernard Cornwell’s The Saxon Stories, The Last Kingdom is a British series that premiered in 2015. It follows the story of the 866 Viking conquest of York, with each of the four seasons capturing a specific period of time.

Though it is based on real historical events, The Last Kingdom has a definite Game of Thrones vibe to it, and fantasy buffs and history buffs alike find things to love about the show.

With the History Channel’s hit series Vikings wrapping up its run in season 7, now is the time for The Last Kingdom to take over. The Last Kingdom could certainly offer Vikings fans something to watch once their show ends.

Why It Could Be Cancelled: Like all of the high concept shows and movies on Netflix’s lineup, The Last Kingdom could fall victim to the pandemic if the streaming giant decides it would be too difficult to bring the show to life (in a reasonable amount of time) while adhering to local COVID-19 safety rules. Shows like The Last Kingdom require a massive crew to bring the show to life, as many scenes are filmed on location.

That said, executive producer Nigel Marchant indicated that the team is ready and willing to do a season 5 if they are given the green light. Of course, those comments were before the worldwide shutdown that drove shows to a standstill. They would no doubt have to have a solid plan to bring the show back for season 5 with all of the filming restrictions in place.

UPDATE: The Last Kingdom is coming back for season 5!
