What It’s About: Altered Carbon is a futuristic thriller set 360 years in the future. In this world, immortality is possible thanks to alien technology that was engineered to create a device called the cortical stack that stores a person’s memories and personality so that they can continue living indefinitely. Naturally, this technology has created a divide between the people wealthy enough to utilize the technology and the ones who can’t.

The story follows one of the wealthiest men in the world who turns to a former political operative and mercenary names Kovacs to help him solve a murder.

The intriguing aspect of Altered Carbon, and the reason that the show has phenomenal staying power, is that bodies can be switched out at will, allowing for new actors to fill the roles in different time periods. For example, Kovacs has been played by three actors, including Anthony Mackie in season 2. With so much room to reinvent itself to avoid becoming stale, Altered Carbon seems like a surefire renewal.

Why It Could Be Cancelled: Altered Carbon is incredibly high concept, and that makes it an expensive show to produce. It has a solid fan base and season 2 was met with high praise from fans, but Netflix hasn’t said anything about the show’s future yet and that can be taken as a sign of uncertainty.
