Do you miss dance movies? It seems as though that in the 2000s, there was a new dance movie on the big screen every other month, and we ate them all up. While those still hold a special place in many people’s hearts and stream on Netflix from time to time, it’s time for a new one.

Feel the Beat might not be the straightforward dance movie we’re accustomed to, but it’s close enough and we’ll take it. The heartwarming comedy-drama starring a fan-favorite young actress definitely ranks as one of June’s best new release movies, and it could be one of the most popular.

Sofia Carson stars in Feel the Beat as April, a self-involved dancer who missed her chance to leave her mark on Broadway. Once she’s cut out from the Broadway world, she returns to her small Wisconsin hometown in spite of the surefire idle gossip and run-ins with her first love, Nick (Wolfgang Novogratz). However, she reluctantly agrees to coach a group of young, impressionable, and not-so-great dancers. Along the way, she believes she locked down a path back to her Broadway dreams, but upon returning home, she finds much more beyond her own perspective.

Feel the Beat comes from director Elissa Down, who’s also directed such titles as The Black Balloon, The Honor List and Confess. The film was written by Michael Armbruster and Shawn Ku, who have also written the movies Beautiful Boy and End of Sentence. Feel the Beat brings Sofia Carson to Netflix for the first time, after fans got to know her in Disney’s The Descendants and Freeform’s Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists. With the right timing and correct promotion, there’s no stopping Feel the Beat from becoming the viral favorite movie of the month on June 19.
