There are nostalgic throwback movies and then there are just pure video store delicacies. If you grew up in the late ’90s, you remember browsing the aisles of Blockbuster and spotting the million VHS copies of Twister displayed proudly next to the rest of the box office hits. Thanks to Netflix, we’re set for our very own super-’90s Blockbuster movie marathon from the comfort of our own couch, no VHS rentals necessary. Twister without a doubt ranks as one of June’s best new release movies and the perfect way to kick off the summer with a past summer staple.

Helen Hunt stars in Twister as college professor Dr. Jo Harding, who works with a team of students to set up the prototype of a tornado data-collecting device. As one of the powerful storms approach, it’s imperative that Dorothy, the device created by Dr. Harding’s estranged husband Bill (Bill Paxton) is in ship shape. However, Dr. Harding learns that rival Dr. Jonas Miller (Cary Elwes) stole their idea and created his own prototype, bringing Jo and Bill back together for one final storm-chasing mission to beat their opponent.

Twister comes from director Jan de Bont, who also directed such movies as Speed, Speed 2: Cruise Control, The Haunting, and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider — The Cradle of Life. Upon release, the film earned middling reviews from critics and holds a 57% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However, Twister proved itself a hit with the moviegoing audience, bringing in over $494 million worldwide against a budget of $92 million — enough to be the second highest-grossing movie of 1996. The film left behind a legacy of theme park rides and remains a fan-favorite. Throw it back to the ’90s beginning at the top of the month.
