In the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, we are living in unprecedented times. We are stuck at home trying to decide on the best show or movie to watch.
A lot of people would prefer to watch something that takes us to a different world – one devoid of the struggles and worries of today which plague so much of our thoughts. This makes sci-fi and fantasy the perfect genre to dive into.
Fortunately, HBO Max launched today with a good selection of films and television series from this genre.
5 good sci-fi and fantasy movie series on HBO Max
There are 35 total Godzilla movies that have been released between 1954 and 2019, and 10 of those films are available to stream on HBO Max. Included in these available movies are the original ground-breaking 1954 film meant as a metaphor for nuclear weapons and the 2019 film Godzilla: King of the Monsters.
If you’re looking to begin to dive into one of the most iconic film characters of all time, HBO Max is a good place to start.
Game of Thrones
This pick is a result of HBO Max retaining all of the classic HBO titles. Even with the massively disappointing final season, Game of Thrones is still worth diving into for someone who hasn’t seen it. It’s full of intrigue, deception, complex characters and themes and, of course, dragons.
Game of Thrones will let you dive into a world not too dissimilar from our own, but different enough that you will feel transported. It’s the perfect encapsulation of the best parts of the fantasy genre.
The original Alien is regarded as one of the greatest horror movies of all time, and its followup, Aliens, is regarded as one of the greatest action movies of all time. And while Alien 3 is a huge step down from the original two, it is an interesting watch as it is director David Fincher’s feature film debut.
Even though this franchise may not be as vast as others on this list, it is still more than worthy of your time, due to its impact on filmmaking in general alone.
The Lord of the Rings/The Hobbit
Without the Lord of the Rings trilogy, the fantasy genre would not be what it is today. The trilogy garnered 17 total Academy Awards, plus another 13 nominations, all while raking in billions at the worldwide box office to put fantasy in the mainstream. It is a classic story about friendship, love and how anyone can make a difference.
The entire original LOTR trilogy, two of the Hobbit films and the 1977 cartoon iteration of The Hobbit are all available on HBO Max. For a truly enchanting fantasy world, this is a great option.
Harry Potter/The Wizarding World
Who doesn’t love Harry Potter? There is something for everyone in this franchise, and all eight films (as well as the second Fantastic Beasts film) are currently available to stream on HBO Max. This was a the defining franchise of a generation that has long-lasting positive effects on people’s lives.
Often with book-to-movie adaptations, the films don’t nearly live up to the source material. But with Harry Potter, there is something legitimately excellent in each movie to make it endlessly rewatchable.
