Netflix has tapped Joe Russo to write the sequel to the hit Netflix movie Extraction, which means Extraction 2 is officially in the works.

If you’re hoping to see Chris Hemsworth as Tyler Rake again in the near future, you’re in luck! According to a report from Variety, Extraction 2 is officially in the works at Netflix.

The report confirms Joe Russo, who produced Extraction along with his brother, Anthony, has been tapped to write the script for the sequel.

It’s not known if Hemsworth will be back for the sequel. Obviously, that’s the plan moving forward, but the Variety report mentioned that negotiations with Hemsworth and with director Sam Hargrave will not take place until there is a script in place.

Hopefully, Hemsworth has time in between the upcoming Thor movie and his other projects to make this sequel happen.

Extraction premiered on Netflix on April 24, and it’s a massive hit. According to the streaming network, the film is on pace to be the biggest Netflix original movie yet. And, that’s a pretty high bar with some of the big Netflix movies we’ve seen over the last few years.

The film tells the story of Tyler Rake (Hemsworth), a mercenary, who is sent into Dhaka to rescue the child of the leader of an international crime ring. Hemsworth is joined in the film by Stranger Things star David Harbour, Rudhraksh Jaiswal, Randeep Hooda, Geetanjali Thapa, Golshifteh Farahani, and Pankaj Tripathi.

If you’re a fan of action movies, this is probably good news. Extraction is one of the best Netflix original action movies yet. While the story has a few flaws, the action sequences are incredible. Hargrave, who spent years working on Marvel movies, nailed the action in this movie.

Based on the success and popularity of the film, there’s a good chance Tyler Rake becomes Netflix’s big action character. This could just be the beginning of Hemsworth’s run on the streaming network.

So far, Netflix hasn’t had many opportunities with its original movies to turn them into sequels and franchises. But, there are a few in the works, including Bright 2, the To All the Boys franchise, The Kissing Booth 2, and more.

There are still a ton of moving parts with the sequel. It’s possible Netflix could reject the script if they don’t like it, although I don’t think that will be the case. Russo is one of the best storytellers in the industry right now, and Netflix should definitely move forward with this project.

We’ll be sure to let you know more about Extraction 2 as soon as we find out! Stay tuned for more information about the movie.
