Jerry Maguire (1996)
“Show me the money!!”
“You had me at hello.”
The fact this movie has two quotes on the AFI Top 100 quotes of all time should say something about its iconic standing.
Tom Cruise plays the titular sports agent, Jerry Maguire, whose sudden moral epiphany causes him to lose his job and all but one of his clients – wide receiver Rod Tidwell (played by Cuba Gooding Jr., who won the Oscar for this role). Jerry then makes it his purpose to ensure Tidwell has the best season possible so he can get the best possible contract.
Apart from the iconic lines, this movie is perfect for anyone who loves sports and is looking for a good sports movie on Netflix. It’s all about statistics and making sure Rod stays in shape for his contract.
This is also one of about five great movies that Cruise made in the 90s. It isn’t his best performance (we’ll get to that), but he sure is great. He’s full of energy and has a magnetic personality that makes it totally obvious why he excels at his job.
And of course, the movie’s message about putting aside selfishness and a drive for personal gain in exchange for a connection with others is poignant. It stresses that what’s important isn’t making millions of dollars in a borderline unethical way. Rather, having a family, or at least making a real and tangible impact in the lives of others is more meaningful in the long run.
