Back to the Future Part III (1990)

Marty McFly and Doc Brown are two of the most recognizable movie characters of all time. Marty’s swagger and overall lovableness made Michael J. Fox an instant star (along with Teen Wolf being released the same year), and Doc’s manic obsession with time travel and his DeLorean cement him as a special character. So anything with those two characters will be at least watchable.

Part II is still good, but not as great as the first. It shows the limits of the series in that the first movie really struck gold. The third movie is even more so down this road, but it still holds the heart and fun of the series as a whole.

The wild west is a cool setting for the movie that makes it stand out and be different from the first two. It’s a legitimately impressive feat that Robert Zemeckis was able to produce three very good to great time travel movies and have them each feel different, unique and fresh. He’s able to put the trilogy in the conversation with many of the other trilogies that sustained their quality from beginning to end.

So while Part III isn’t the best of the bunch, it’s representative of something that came before and the quality of the film that was being produced at the time. These movies are campy and comedic, but that’s just part of their charm.
