The Murder and Trial

There are so many pieces and strings to this investigation.

On June 17, 2013, Odin Lloyd’s body was found in North Attleborough, Massachusetts in an industrial park which was less than a mile from Hernandez’s home.

Let’s shed some light and background on Lloyd and his relationship with Aaron Hernandez.

Hernandez met Lloyd through his fiancé, Shayanna Jenkins. Lloyd was dating Jenkins’ sister and that is how Hernandez and Lloyd met each other. They had a lot in common. Both loved sports, marijuana and playing video games, according to the documentary.

Just nine days later on June 26, authorities arrived at Hernandez’s house to take him into custody for the murder of Odin Lloyd. But it was later discovered that Hernandez was not the only person. involved in the murder. Earnest Wallace and Carlos Ortiz were also involved.

Hernandez met Wallace and Ortiz back before he left for college. Wallace and Ortiz would regularly come over to Tanya’s house.

Not long after those three were in custody, Tanya Singleton found herself in legal trouble as well. Prosecutors say that Singleton tried to help both men get away after Lloyd’s murder, driving Wallace out-of-state and trying to help Ortiz leave the country.

While Hernandez was in Bristol county jail, prosecutors turned their investigation to the house of Tanya. While conducting a search warrant, investigators found a silver SUV inside the garage, and it hadn’t been driven in a  long time.

It was determined by police that the SUV that was found in the garage at Singleton’s house was a car that the Boston police had been looking for in connection to an unsolved double homicide. Hernandez was now a lead suspect in that case as well, but due to him already having a pending murder case in Bristol, he can’t face trial until his first case reaches a verdict.

The evidence against Hernandez was overwhelming in the Lloyd case.

On the night of Lloyd’s murder, Hernandez picked Lloyd up from his house a little after 2:30 a.m. Wallace and Ortiz were in the car with him. Later that night, surveillance footage showed Hernandez coming inside his house, walking around with a gun in his hand.

Another piece of evidence was a blunt that was found next to Lloyd’s dead body that was later determined to contain Hernandez’s DNA on it. Hernandez rented a 2012 Nissan that when it was returned to Enterprise the next day, a bullet was found in the car that matched the casings found at the murder scene.

As the case came close to the end, it shocked prosecutors that in the closing statements from the defense attorney. He admitted that Hernandez was in fact at the scene the night Lloyd was murdered in cold blood. The defense took the approach of Wallace and Ortiz were the ones that killed Lloyd and Hernandez was scared and terrified of them.

Video surveillance from the Hernandez’s home the next day played in court for all to see. What you saw on video was Wallace and Ortiz hanging out with Hernandez and his child less than 24 hours of Lloyd’s murder. It was clear Hernandez was not in fear of Wallace or Ortiz.

The jury took 7 days to deliberate.

Aaron Hernandez was found guilty of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison without parole.
