A short list of big Netflix shows that will not be released in 2020, including Stranger Things, The Witcher, and more.

It’s well known Netflix plans for a big gap between new seasons of its original shows. Absence seems to make the heart grow fonder for many fans of Netflix shows, apparently.

It’s hard to make shows that are released at one time. Production isn’t drawn out over the year like many network comedies and dramas, and it takes a lot of time to write, film, edit, and promote all these shows. That’s generally why there is such a big gap between seasons.

Unfortunately, there are a few major shows that won’t be back this year with new seasons. Let’s get that list started with Stranger Things.

Stranger Things

Stranger Things is the biggest and best Netflix show yet, and fans all know about the long gaps between seasons of this show.

The Duffer Brothers and the writers need time to figure out this story, and they need a lot of time to film the great seasons. There are labor laws they have to work with, and there are all the regular challenges of making a show that uses CGI.

Stranger Things 4 is not coming to Netflix this year. Production is scheduled to start soon, and it’s expected to last through the end of the summer. That doesn’t leave enough time to edit and promote this series. Instead, it’s much more likely that Stranger Things 4 arrives in 2021.

The Witcher

The Witcher is well on its way to becoming another massive Netflix hit, and it’s already been renewed for season 2. Unfortunately, like Stranger Things, The Witcher will also need a long time to film each season because of all the CGI and moving parts of the production.

The Witcher season 2 is expected to start filming in early 2020, according to Netflix, and it will last most of the year. That means, again, we’re going to have to wait until 2021 to see the new season of the show.

Mindhunter

Mindhunter, Netflix’s best psychological thriller, returned for its second season in 2019, and it was another big hit after a nearly two-year wait. The first season premiered way back in 2017. Unfortunately, it looks like there’s going to be another long gap between seasons, if the show does return for its third season.

David Fincher can take as much time as he wants, and I don’t think Netflix will mind. This series is a slow burn for all parties involved.

It should be noted that Mindhunter has not been renewed for season 3 at Netflix yet. There’s no way, at this point, that the new season will be added to Netflix in 2020. It will be at least 2021 before we see the new season of this series.
