2. The Good Place
Much like Star Trek, The Good Place‘s general atmosphere leads credence to it being the perfect holiday show rather than the content. As we said, Christmas is a season about hope, redemption, love, and seeing the good in our fellow person. One of the most famous Christmas stories, A Christmas Carol, focuses on the redemption through the holiday season on a, at first glance, thoroughly irredeemable person. The Good Place does just that, but through growth and change over everything else.
The conceit of the existential comedy is that people can change and grow, become a better person, but only if they put the work into becoming a better person. Eleanor Shellstrop (Kristen Bell) isn’t as bad as Scrooge in the beginning of the series, but she’s not great either. She and her fellows on Team Cockroach prove that people can grow and become better. Isn’t that the perfect message to hear during Christmas? People can change for the better, but only if they put the work in for it.
There are no three spirits for Team Cockroach, just a lot of reflection, hope, and working through their own issues over time. All while giving us a ton of laughs along the way, The Good Place reminds you of the true message of Christmas all year long. It’s perfect to watch on Christmas Eve.
