4. Star Trek

Okay, we admit, this is a little out there in terms of recommended viewing. When Gene Roddenberry created Star Trek, it was with the belief of showing the best of people: no matter their race or creed. When else but the holiday season should that be on the forefront of our minds?

Even as the franchise got darker and more complex as time went on, there are still those all too important moments of warmth, hope, kindness, and redemption. The future is always what we make of it. With Star Trek, the reminder is that maybe we can make the future into a better, kinder, and more tolerant place.

Now, we’re not recommending that you watch the whole of Star Trek. There are some great episodes from each series that captures the meaning of the holiday spirit. Star Trek itself didn’t have holiday episodes due to the future being seen as a secular-humanist sort of place by Roddenberry.

Our recommendations for Star Trek episodes of Netflix to check out for that warm holiday feeling: “Carbon Creek” (Enterprise), “Journey to Babel” (The Original Series), “Data’s Day” (The Next Generation), “The Inner Light” (The Next Generation), “Once More Unto the Breach” (Deep Space 9), and “Real Life” (Voyager).
