Obviously, Home Alone is a no brainer. If you wondering how a Christmas classic, an annual standby must-watch could be ranked so low, it’s because… well, it’s blasphemous to assume the world hasn’t already started streaming it on Disney+. Since it’s not a Disney film, most subscribers were more than likely surprised to see the holiday favorite on the new platform. But the company’s assets are far-reaching, almost as far-reaching as Kevin McCallister’s authority over the Wet Bandits.
Macaulay Culkin stars in Home Alone as Kevin McCallister, the precocious eight-year-old youngest son and sibling in his family. He’s prone to mischief and tantrums, which come out in full force the night before his entire extended family leaves on a Christmas trip to Paris. Because of his behavior, he’s banished to sleep in the attic, where he wishes his family would disappear. A power outage leaves the family scrambling to make their flight on time and accidentally leave Kevin behind. Having received his wish, Kevin has the house to himself for the holiday, but he must face off against and outwit a pair of ruthless robbers (Joe Pesci, Daniel Stern).
Home Alone comes from director Chris Columbus, who also directed the sequel, Mrs. Doubtfire and the first two Harry Potter films as well as writer John Hughes, whose legacy speaks for itself. Despite its worldwide box office draw of $476.7 million, the film holds only a 65% on Rotten Tomatoes. However, the film has lived on as a beloved classic and spawned the sequels Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, Home Alone 3 (both of which are available on Disney+) and two additional TV sequels. Disney+ has announced plans to reboot the franchise, making now the perfect time to revisit the original before the streaming service goes home alone again.
