2. The Nightmare Before Christmas

What’s it like when Halloween Town celebrates Christmas for the first time? If you’ve seen The Nightmare Before Christmas, you know the answer. It’s doesn’t look exactly what we think of when we think Christmas

The movie begins in Halloween Town, a place where all the monsters and supernatural being live. The leader of the town, Jack Skellington aka the Pumpkin King, leads the inhabitants in all the yearly Halloween celebrations. But Jack has grown tired of the same thing every year.

Out of nowhere, when wandering in the woods, Jack comes across seven trees with doors leading to various portals to different places, including Christmas Town. That’s the one Jack opens. And he is shocked by what he sees. Snow and Santa and lights and cheer.

When he comes back to Halloween Town, he wants to show everyone how great it can be. But they don’t understand. They only get the idea of what they call “Sandy Claws.”

Upset that he can’t explain what he saw properly, Jack locks himself away in his tower where he ultimately comes to the decision that Halloween Town will take over Christmas this year. He announces this and assigns different people Christmas-themed jobs like singing carols and making presents. This also includes telling three residents to kidnap Santa. This is where it goes wrong.

Jack tells them to bring Santa to him so they’re safe, but they end up taking him to Oogie Boogie, a gambling-addicted bogeyman who attempts to kill Santa. Sally, a rag doll in love with Jack, tries to rescue Santa but is also captured by Oogie.

While this is happening, Jack is delivering horrifying gifts to children around the world. Worried about Santa and these new gifts, the military shoots down Jack. Luckily, he survives and returns to Halloween Town to go to Oogie Boogie. Once there, he tries to save Santa and Sally.

If you like darker Christmas stories or anything Tim Burton, this is the movie for you!
