4. While You Were Sleeping

While You Were Sleeping is one of the ultimate holiday rom-coms. The movie begins with Lucy played by Sandra Bullock. She’s a token collector for the Chicago Transit Authority and clearly lonely and a little sad. She finds herself making up stories about her secret crush, a commuter named Peter Callaghan.

Her life is pretty mundane until Christmas Day when he falls onto the track and Lucy rescues him. But he falls into a coma and when Lucy goes with him to the hospital,  a nurse overhears her saying she was going to marry Peter. The nurse, then, misinterprets this and tells his family who rushes to his side that she’s his fiance.

Lucy, caught in a panic, doesn’t explain the truth and then when she feels how great it is to be part of a family, she continues to keep it a secret. She only confesses to a sleeping Peter, but his godfather ends up overheating her. Luckily, he agrees to keep her secret because it brought the family closer together. She also doesn’t want to hurt this family she comes to maybe love by explaining her lie.

She spends Christmas with them and that night meets Peter’s older brother, Jack. He is at first suspicious that Peter would go for her, but the more they spend time with each other, they begin to have feelings for one another.

It isn’t until New Year’s Eve when Peter wakes up does this become a real problem. Peter doesn’t know who Lucy is, but the family just assumes he has amnesia. He goes along with it and eventually proposes to her. Still going along with the lie, she accepts despite being in love with Jack.

Lucy literally leaves it until the last minute to tell the family the truth. When does she do this? The day of her wedding (Girl! What?). She also tells them that she’s in love with Jack.

In the chaos, Lucy sneaks away. It isn’t until sometime later when  Lucy is back at work and then someone passes an engagement ring through the slot for tokens. I wonder who is on the other side of the glass…
