6. The Santa Clause

While it’s not as old as some of the other classic Christmas movies, at this point, The Santa Clause is a bona fide classic and one to watch every holiday season. The film stars Tim Allen, Eric Lloyd, Wendy Crewson, Judge Reinhold, and David Krumholtz.

The movie asks the question: what happens when Santa dies? The answer: the guy who’s there when he dies takes over the job. That’s how Scott Calvin, a toy salesman, ends up reluctantly becoming Santa Clause.

While spending Christmas Eve with his son, Charlie, and after reading The Night Before Christmas, the two go to bed only to be awoken by a noise on the roof.  Rushing outside thinking there’s an intruder on the roof, he yells at the man causing him to fall to his death (it’s not as morbid as it seems, I swear).

A note in Santa’s coat tell Scott to get in the sleigh, but Scott dismisses it. Charlie, on the other hand, gets in right away and Scott follows him. Before they know it, they’re flying through the air via the reindeer and end up at the North Pole. Bernard, the head elf, greets them and explains what’s going on. Scott has 11 months to get his things in order and then he must take on his Santa duties.

Not believing a word the elf says, Scott goes back to his life. But magic doesn’t care what works for you. It does its job, regardless. And so Scott begins to transform into the jolly old elf himself and gains weight and grows a beard that reappears immediately after he tries to shave it off.

It would all be relatively fine if it weren’t for Charlie telling everyone his dad is the new Santa. Scott’s ex-wife, Laura, and her husband, Neil, are worried for Charlie’s mental well-being and want Scott to tell Charlie there’s no Santa Clause. But he refuses to break Charlie’s heart and convinces him to keep it a secret.

But with his new appearance and children coming up to him to ask for presents, Laura and Neil believe he is harming Charlie and petition to have his visitation rights taken away. Scott refuses to give up though and visits Charlie on Thanksgiving.

Unfortunately, Bernard also shows up and transports them both to the North Pole making Laura think Scott kidnapped him. Scott is quickly arrested when he goes to deliver toys as Santa.

That’s when the elves get involved. They send in a team to break Santa out of jail. Scott then returns to Laura and Neil’s home to convince them he really is Santa.

If you’re not feeling the holiday spirit or know someone who’s not, watch this movie. It’s almost guaranteed to have you feeling the magic in the air that usually comes this time of the year.
