Ever since Disney effectively ended its Marvel partnership with Netflix, fans of those series are probably starting to miss new episodes of shows like Daredevil, Jessica Jones and Luke Cage.

While those shows are still available to stream, they’re are officially over. But Jon Bernthal, who appeared in Daredevil and The Punisher, returns to the streamer this month in the indie neo-noir crime thriller Sweet Virginia. It’s not Marvel, but it’s one of the month’s best new additions.

Jon Bernthal stars in Sweet Virginia as Sam Rossi, an ex-rodeo rider who befriends Elwood (Christopher Abbott), the man who just might be responsible for the violence erupting in their small town. The film opens with the brutal killing of three men at the bar during their weekly poker game, which Sam reads about in the paper the next day. Throughout the film, Sam starts to unravel the truth behind the shooting event and his new friend Elwood, who seems to be harboring quite a few dark secrets.

Sweet Virginia comes from director Jamie M. Dagg, who also directed the film River. The film first made its premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival in April 2017, where it was later picked up for distribution by IFC films and released in November 2017. Sweet Virginia holds a certified fresh rating of 78% on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics praising the acting and the story’s ability to transcend genre. If you’re in the mood for something a little darker this holiday season, give this indie flick a shot when it starts streaming on Netflix at the top of December.
