Who hasn’t ever wanted to go on a treasure hunt? Well, that’s exactly what Sloane Kelly is doing in Holly Star whether she likes it or not.

Sloane is not having the best of luck lately. She’s out of money, rent has gone up, and her roommate just moved out. But since she’s heading home for the holidays, she has some time to think it all over. She doesn’t expect to end up in Maine participating in a treasure hunt with her best friend who is obsessed with paintball, her grandmother who loves to tango, and her crush from childhood who now sells Christmas trees and who gives her a job doing the same. What could go wrong?

On her way home, she steps into the path of an oncoming truck and has a moment where her life flashes before her eyes. She sees her grandfather dressed as Santa and burying a sack in the middle of town. What was he doing? What was in the sack? She remembers it being a lot of money. And since she’s broke, she realizes she needs to find that sack.

Unfortunately, she has no idea why he had the money or why he’d bury it, but the memory is what starts off the treasure hunt where she and her friends must look for clues of where the sack may be. But she only gets clues when her life flashes before her eyes, so her friend has to try to kill her to get the clues. Totally reasonable.

Along the way, Sloane might just find much more than some money, including love, friendship, and the meaning of her life.
