23. A Holiday Engagement

If you love the fake dating trope, A Holiday Engagement might be just the movie for you. After Hillary Burns is dumped right before the holidays, she hires an actor to pretend to be her fiance for the four-day Thanksgiving weekend at her parents’ home.

Why would she lie to her family about her relationship status? It all has to do with her mother, Meredith, who has been pressuring her to marry and it only gets worse around the holiday season. So she hires someone to stop her mother from bothering her. She had told her mom she was bringing her fiance to dinner; it’s not like she expected him to break up with her right before the holidays (rude!).

To find someone to hire, Hillary posts a video ad online for a fake fiance and, as you can probably guess (especially if you’re a woman on the internet), she gets a lot of offers that she passes on. But then David, an out of work actor, contacts her and agrees to pose as her lawyer fiance in front of her mom, dad, and snobby sister (played by Haylie Duff).

But as always happens with the fake dating trope, the pair eventually starts to have real feelings for each other. But will it become the real thing or will Hillary’s family make David want to run for the hills?

They might not be able to find out because her original fiance shows up at Christmas! The drama! But with this fiasco, her mother is able to figure out that her daughter went to all this trouble because of her past actions.

If you love a fun Christmas family romance, check out A Holiday Engagement!
