9. Angela’s Christmas

Angela’s Christmas is a short animated film about a little Irish girl in 1910 who wants to make sure everyone has the best Christmas possible. At the beginning of the story, she sneaks into the church and sees the baby Jesus figurine in the manger. Thinking he’s real and sure to freeze in the cold without a blanket, she takes him with her.

Unfortunately, her innocent act is found out and she is chased by the police and ratted out by other children. But she refuses to give him up. She just wants to keep him warm and doesn’t understand why everyone thinks she’s stealing him or doing something bad. She then takes him home and wraps him in a blanket on her bed, falling asleep with her arm wrapped around him.

But after her mother tells her a story, the whole family goes to return the baby figure back to the manger. They run into a police officer and the priest on the way there and thinking Angela is going to get arrested, her brother defends her, saying he will go to jail in her place. Of course, no one ends up in jail, and the baby Jesus is returned to the manger but with the addition of a sweater so he stays warm

The film features the voices of Malachy McCourt, the younger brother of the author of the story the film is based on, Ruth Negga, Vivian Drew, Brian Gleeson, and Anya O’Connor.

The film is based on a true story the author’s mother used to tell him when he was young. If you’re looking for a sweet, funny, and heartwarming story to watch with your kids during the holiday season, Angela’s Christmas is the perfect little film.
