11. White Christmas

If you’re looking for a Christmas classic, White Christmas is also available on Netflix. The holiday film stars Bing Crosby, Danny Kate, Rosemary Clooney, Dean Jagger, and Vera-Ellen and tells the story of two army soldiers turned performers, Bon and Phil, who meet the Haynes sister, Betty and Judy, and then follow them to Vermont.

When they get there, not only do they find no snow, they find their former general who they fought in World War II with, Major General Thomas Waverly. But he is not how they once knew him. He’s a grandfather, an inn runner, and retired.

The sisters are meant to perform at the inn, but when they get there, there are almost no other lodgers. But when Bob and Phil see how much the inn is struggling, they decide to bring everyone they know from show business to Vermont to put on their show. It will be good for the employees and bring more guests to the inn.

While they work, Bob and Betty become closer as do Phil and Judy, but their relationships are anything but smooth sailing. The receptionist is on the nosy side and listens in on one of Bob’s telephone conversations. She thinks she hears him saying something bad about the general and tells Betty.

Betty, now angry, ends her relationship with Bob and decides to leave the inn altogether, not wanting anything to do with what they’re doing there. Phil and Judy do everything they can to get them back together but it takes Bob going to visit Betty at her new gig and her seeing him on television talking about the general to see how much she misunderstood him.

The film is liberally sprinkled with a bunch of musical numbers but the grand finale has all four main characters coming together to sing White Christmas. Whether this is a movie you watch as part of a tradition or you’re just in the mood to watch an old Hollywood classic, you can check it out on Netflix.
