23. The Power of Dog
Who’s in it: Benedict Cumberbatch and Elisabeth Moss are confirmed so far.
Why put it on your list: Again, this is a movie that already has a great cast. That isn’t all that makes a movie, though. The Power of Dog also has standout writer-director, Jane Campion, behind it. There’s no doubt that you’ll want to check it out with that in mind.
But there’s more to love. Cannes Film Festival was abuzz with the upcoming original. It was one of the most talked-about movies, and now many can’t wait for 2021 for the movie to finally be released.
The Power of Dog is based on the 1967 novel by Thomas Savage. Cumberbatch plays Phil Burbank, who is one side of a coin while his brother, George, is the other. You’re used to seeing Cumberbatch in graceful and smart roles, which is something you’ll see in this movie. However, while he’s brilliant, he’s also cruel, so don’t expect to like the character all that much.
The two brothers own a ranch in Montana Valley. As the 20th century modernizes, the two men try to keep all that from their ranch. Of course, that’s not going to be easy. Things get worse when George marries Rose, a local widow and played by Moss. Phil’s sadistic side is about to shine through.
