While Walking Dead fans have been eagerly awaiting the Michonne-Ezekiel kiss, they were sorely disappointed by the context of it. Find out why below.

A major highlight from The Walking Dead season 10 trailer was the glimpse at Ezekiel and Michonne sharing a kiss, mainly because it mirrored a pivotal arc from the graphic novel. Fans expected these two to become romantically involved but the truth turned out to be much different.

In “Silence The Whispers”, Ezekiel (Khary Payton) falls into a partially catatonic state. He can move around and walk, but he’s later seen wandering aimlessly around Hilltop. The situation becomes so severe that Ezekiel walks up to a ridge with the intent of jumping to his death. He’s about to take the leap when Michonne (Danai Gurira) talks him down off the ledge. They then share a brief hug.

Shortly after they embrace each other, Ezekiel pulls away from the hug only to kiss Michonne. She’s reluctant to accept but allows it to happen. Nothing else occurs as they both realize the mistake.

Audiences might assume this is the first stage in Michonne and Ezekiel becoming romantically involved but Mrs. Grimes ruled that possibility out. She literally tells the King that it would never work out because they’re both too stubborn.

What’s funny is Ezekiel cleverly replies “maybe in a different universe”. A casual viewer wouldn’t know this, but he was referencing their shared comic arc. In it, Michonne began a romance with Ezekiel instead of her onscreen lover. One might even argue that it resembled Michonne’s first interactions with Rick (Andrew Lincoln) on the TV adaptation.

Source material aside, there’s nothing holding Ezekiel and Michonne back from a romance. They both discussed how difficult it is moving on and they may find comfort in each other’s arms because of it. That said, we don’t see Mrs. Grimes giving up on her husband any time soon, especially when they still have a chance at reunification.

Will Michonne and Rick be reunited in the Walking Dead movies?

For those who don’t know, Andrew Lincoln will star in three Walking Dead movies, the first of which will debut in 2020. These are set away from the TV series, though some connections between the two will be established.

Danai Gurira is of interest here because she’s leaving AMC’s television series after season 10. There’s no correlation between the two, but Gurira’s departure does conveniently open up her schedule to shoot scenes for the movies. She hasn’t officially signed on yet, of course, it’s just a matter of time.

Assuming she does, Michonne could wind up playing a significant role in next year’s movie. Part of the reason Rick Grimes’ story was so intriguing was that he had compelling companions alongside him, characters like Michonne and Carl. The latter can’t appear for obvious reasons but Mrs. Grimes can be in the story, and by all accounts, she should be.

Do you think Gurira’s character will appear alongside Lincoln in next year’s movie? Let us know in the comments.
