Stranger Things 4 starts filming in January 2020 and is scheduled to wrap in August, which means there’s very little chance we see the new season next year.

The Stranger Things 4 production timeline has been revealed, according to a report from TV Line. The report claims production on Stranger Things 4 will start in January 2020 and will end about eight months later in August.

While the start of production is very important, the end of production is even more important in terms of the release date for Stranger Things 4, and that’s why all the fans want to know at this point.

There are eight episodes in the new season, according to the report, and that number should be familiar to a lot of fans. The first season also had eight episodes, as did the third season. We were lucky to get nine episodes in Stranger Things 2. By the end of season 4, 25 episodes of the hit Netflix original series will have aired.

Many fans might be wondering why production will take eight months when there are eight episodes in the series. Well, there are a number of things at play here. First of all, this is a major production. There’s a lot of money being spent, and there are dozens of moving parts with the special effects, CGI and just general aesthetic. This show is set in the ’80s after all, and they film a lot of scenes on location, which means they aren’t using sound stages. All these things take a lot of time.

In addition, Stranger Things has a lot of younger stars, and there are laws about how much those actors can work in a day, a week, etc. So, they have to adhere to those rules, too.

This show is big-time, and that means they need a lot more time to plan, rehearse, and do everything else that goes into making an eight-hour movie, basically. It’s going to be a while until the show wraps production on season 4.

Obviously, that likely pushes the release date for season 4 back to 2021. I don’t think there’s any way they will have the show ready for Christmas 2020 with all the editing, coloring and promotion that has to happen for a show like this.

It’s much more likely that we’ll see the show in the spring, summer or fall of 2021. I don’t know if they’d make us wait a full year from the end of production to release the season, but it’ll be a while. Stranger Things 3 wrapped filming in November 2018 and it wasn’t released until July 2019. That’s nearly eight months. Expect a similar timeline for the new season and its release on Netflix.
