Horror fans were elated when the new Creepshow series from Shudder had a surprise early release this morning. The first episode is now available to stream.

Shudder had previously announced that its new series, based on the original Creepshow films, would drop tonight at 6 p.m. P,  but instead, they released the first episode on its streaming platform this morning around 9 a.m. PT, according to a post to Facebook.

The new series is based on the original films, the first of which was in 1982 and drew a huge cult following. The level of love people have for that film is unsurprising due to the talent involved. It was written by Stephen King and directed by George Romero, so essentially it was made by two horror gods. It spawned two remake films, one in 1987 and the other in 2006.

Stephen King is credited with having written one episode for this new series, which means you know this new reboot is going to be good. It just wouldn’t be the same if he didn’t have some hand in it and fans like myself are thrilled to have him involved with it.

Creepshow’s film series was itself based off a known property. The  E.C horror comic books of the 1950s, were the inspiration that King and Romero drew from. This new series, judging by the first episode, follows along those lines and should delight any fan of the original films.

The series is sleeker than the films were, but it still has that comic book feel and holds all the other elements that fans have come to expect. With Greg Nicotero, a horror god in his own right, behind this as one of the executive producers, you know that means killer special effects. He changed the game in special effects use for TV series with The Walking Dead and brought those skills to Creepshow.

This first episode is titled ” Gray Matter/ The House of the Head” and features well-known horror actors, much like the films did. Tobin Bell from the Saw film franchise is the first actor we get to see and it made my horror-loving heart so happy. According to IMDb, there are many more familiar faces we will be seeing this season.

This isn’t the horror streaming site’s first foray into original content, though it may be the one with the most built-in fans. Over the last year, the site has really started to move into original programming. With the addition of the multitude of other streaming platforms in development, fans will have more choices than ever to find great horror content but only one place to find Creepshow.
