Zak Hilditch’s first Netflix film was a direct adaptation of Stephen King’s novella of the same name. The story was originally published in 2010 as part of his collection titled Full Dark, No Stars. The film was part of Netflix’s horror slate that dropped in the fall of 2017.
1922 follows a farmer who gets into a spat with his wife due to their disagreement about whether to sell their land. Wilf (Jane) wants to keep the land whereas his wife Arlette (Parker) has the idea that they should sell it to move to the city. Wilf then convinces the couple’s son, Henry (Schmid), to help murder Arlette, after claiming that she is displeased with the young man’s girlfriend. They carry out the murder but it comes back to haunt them, literally.
Wilf covers up the murder but the local sheriff is suspicious about Arlette’s disappearance. The man is then haunted by his dead wife and his son starts to regret what they did. Henry then leaves the farm to be with his pregnant girlfriend, leaving Wilf to go mad from what he’s done. 1922 received very favorable reviews from critics and viewers.
