Little Monsters is another family-friendly pick for viewers of all ages who like creature features. Since the dark comedy’s debut, it had gone on to become a cult classic from the ’80s. The movie was directed by Richard Alan Greenberg, who had been best known as an expert developer of title sequences and credits for the film industry.
The comedy follows a young boy named Brian (Fred Savage) who feels like an outsider after his family moves to Boston. Brian’s younger brother claims to have seen a monster under his bed so Brian investigates by setting traps. He then captures Maurice (Mandel), a blue-skinned monster. The two quickly become friends and Maurice invites Brian to the monster world under the bed. The duo has fun causing mischief but Brian realizes that he too is transforming into a monster with no solution how to stop the changes.
The storyline may seem innocent on the surface but it focuses on a very unlikely friendship. There is also a theme of acceptance and forming new relationships at a young age. The brothers featured in Little Monsters, Fred and Ben Savage, are brothers in real-life. Fred had his breakout role as Kevin in The Wonder Years whereas Ben starred as Cory in Boy Meets World.
