9. Hush

Release Year: 2016

Directed By: Mike Flanagan

Cast: Kate Siegel, John Gallagher Jr., Michael Trucco, Samantha Sloyan, Emilia Graves

Hush was developed by the husband and wife team of Mike Flanagan and Kate Siegel. The duo co-wrote the film with Flanagan directing and Siegel starring in the lead. The horror movie instantly stood out for featuring a deaf and mute woman as the central character.

The film follows a woman named Maddie (Siegel) who is deaf and mute after contracting bacterial meningitis at a young age. As an adult, she became an author and lives in the woods in isolation. One night, her neighbor is chased by a masked killer and tries to get Maddie’s help. Unable to hear, Maddie is unaware of what’s happening and the killer attempts to get her attention.

The masked man soon realizes Maddie’s disability so he makes himself known through other methods. Maddie acts as though help is soon coming but her plan doesn’t work. With no easy way to escape, Maddie must get a step ahead of the madman.

Netflix purchases the distribution rights in 2015 and the world premiere came during South by Southwest the following year. The movie received rave reviews for its modern take on the slasher genre of horror. Legendary storytellers such as Stephen King have been outspoken about their love for Hush.
