For viewers looking for something in the realm of witchcraft, look no further than Apostle. The film made its debut at Fantastic Fest 2018 before hitting Netflix ahead of the Halloween season. Prior to Apostle, director Gareth Evans was known for developing The Raid series.
Dan Stevens stars as Thomas Richardson, a drifter who sets out to rescue his sister who was kidnapped and held for ransom by a religious cult. The movie is set in 1905 on a remote Welsh island which is where the cult holds their sacrifices. When Thomas acts as a convert to find his sister, the cult’s leader becomes suspicious. As Thomas investigates and finds the darkness plaguing the island, he must find his sister before she is sacrificed.
Apostle was well received by critics who praised the film for the wide array of horror genres on display. The plot is said to be a slow burn but the performances, especially by Stevens, are well worth sticking around until the end. The cinematography and visuals were also highly impressive according to viewers.
