Carrie is widely revered as one of the greatest horror movies of all time. According to many, it even has a spot on best-lists across all genres. The 1976 supernatural horror is based on Stephen King’s first novel published in 1974. After Carrie, Brian De Palma went on to direct films such as Scarface, Carlito’s Way, and Mission: Impossible.
The horror film follows Carrie White (Spacek), a 16-year-old girl who lives with her religious and abusive mother, Margaret (Laurie). Carrie is also constantly mocked and bullied by the other students at her school. After an incident following gym class, Carrie is sent home and her mother locks her in a “prayer closet.” Her bullies are punished for the way they torment Carrie and are banned from attending prom. They plot their revenge but are unaware of Carrie’s increasingly strong telekinetic powers.
The ending of the movie features one of the most iconic moments in film history. Carrie has highly influenced the horror genre as well as pop culture. Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie were nominated for Academy Awards for their performances.
